Thanks to the influence of these warm currents, the Lofoten islands have a mild climate in comparison to their position north of the Arctic Circle. However, weather conditions can change very quickly, so it is always good to be ready for any quick change and temperature. Strong winds can happen all year around and their strength changes according to the wind direction. In winter, winds from the north bring snow and low temperature, while in summer (spring), southern ones bring rain.
Before travelling to Norway, we suggest you to avoid checking long-term forecast as the weather may change very quickly for the reasons we have already mentioned.
The best suggestion we can give you is to bring the right clothes and be ready to experience different kinds of weather in one day!
“det finnes ikke dårlig vær, men bare dårlige klær” : with the right clothing, no risk to get disappointed by the Lofoten islands weather.
In winter the rainiest period is from September to December.
The coldest month is February with -2°C of average minimum temperature and with 1°C average maximum temperature.
If in winter time the average minimum temperatures is -3, it can happen to experience, although for short periods, – 10/12 degrees.
The driest months are those between May and June.
The temperatures reach the maximum values in the months of July and August with 15°C of average maximum temperature and 12°C of average minimum temperature.
In summer sometimes it can happen to enjoy +18/20 degrees.
The sea water temperature reaches the maximum temperature of 12°C in July and August.
Despite the season, to bring different layers is always worth.
The weather changes very quickly and it’s always worth to get ready to every change which may occur. In winter we suggest to bring extra clothing, especially if you are taking part in an long northern lights chase!
Even during summer, it’s wise to bring a rain jacket and a fleece in your luggage in case the weather changes or the temperatures drops while you are staying here, enjoying the midnight sun.
SUMMER
WINTER
The best months for a trip to the Lofoten islands are undoubtedly those of spring and summer, between May / June to August, these months are characterized by mild temperatures, low rains and long days of light, between late May and mid-July you can admire the phenomenon of the Midnight Sun, during this period the Sun never drops below the horizon.
If instead you want to try to admire the wonderful lights of the Northern Lights the suitable period is winter, but they are generally visible between September and April.
During the midnight sun season, the sun never sets and you will have the chance of enjoying 24 hours of sunshine.
Both hotels and private accommodation (Airbnb) have curtains, but if you have sleeping problems, we suggest to bring a good sleeping mask!
During the Polar night season, if you are lucky with the weather, you can still enjoy 3 hours of daylight until December the 21st. After the 21st (winter solstice), the days start getting longer and although the sun is not visible at the horizon yet, you can start enjoying up to 4/5 hours of daylight. Darkness is special as, when the weather is good, the sky and its pink-special blue colours make it magical and the atmosphere surreal.
The Norwegian currency is NOK (Norwegian Krone)
The currency we use in Norway is the Norwegian Krone. So, if you’re traveling with only Euro (or other currencies) you might need to change them. We suggest you do not bring cash. Credit cards are accepted everywhere.
Don’t forget that Norway is using less and less cash. Credit cards are the best way to travel without stress. Do not forget that banks don’t change money anymore
You won’t have any communication problems as most a Norwegians speak English very well and will be always at disposal to help you!
Don’t be afraid to say that your English is not very good. Despite the Norwegian shyness, you will always find someone happy to help you.

In Christmas, Easter and other national holidays, the opening hours could change. We suggest to check in advance.
Lofoten has two small airports, one in Leknes and one in Svolvær.
You can fly easily from both airports. Check www.wideroe.no.
The flight takes 25 minutes.
Another worthy option is to land at Evenes/Harstad/Narvik airport.
Evenes airport is about 160 kilometres from Svolvær. You can fly with Norwegian – www.norwegian.no or by Sas (Scandinavian airlines) www.sas.no.
If you decide to land in Evenes, you have to take the bus to reach Lofoten.
We suggest you to check www.flybussen.no or www.reisnordland.com It takes about 3 hours.
Another possibility is renting a car. There are many companies (Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Rent a car Lofoten, Lofoten Rental Car).
You can also check www.rentalcars.com and search for the best price.
You can arrive in Svolvær by taking the Hurtigbåt, 3 hours or by ferry from Bodø to Moskenes.
Moskenes is not well connected. In this case you will have to rent a car or call a taxi to reach your accommodation. If you have a Norwegian sim card, the taxi number is 07550; if you are using your own sim card, then you will have to call +47 22 388 309. You can also download “Taxi fix” which is a a very useful app to book a taxi wherever you are, whenever you want, in advance.
If you want to visit the islands by public transport, you can check www.reisnordland.com.
We suggest to plan carefully as the connections are not very frequent.
